Deck Repair Tips and Considerations
Rotten Wood? Unsafe Deck? Obviously it's time
to make those repairs before someone gets hurt.
You'll need to remove and replace all your rotten wood
since there is no other way to fix this problem.
1. It's best to buy the same kind of wood as
was on the
existing deck. The reason for this is if you are going to
stain or paint the wood, then it must be the same in order
to match the existing deck that is not rotten or is not to
be replaced. If you are think about replacing rotten
wood with pressure treated lumber, yes pressure treated will
last longer but look different. Do a little
experimenting before you buy all your replacement lumber.
See what works the best with your present deck.
2. If the wood you are replacing is the deck boards, once
the deck board is removed, check the joist (the support that
holds all the deck boards) for additional rotting or
cracking. This may need to be replaced or nail in a
new joists along the old joist for new support.
3. Another good tip is to inspect all your nailing or screws
that were used to attach the deck boards to the structure.
Make sure they are somewhat recessed as they were when first
installed.
4. Finally, a wood
decking needs regular maintenance, such as
pressure washing and yearly staining or sealing.
Obviously this will keep your deck from rotting and looking
like a new deck.
If after reading the above and you would rather have a
entirely different deck, one that is near maintenance free
