Go to part 2

What is the cost difference between Redwood and Trex?
Trex is approximately 1-1/2 - 2 times more, less when you consider stain.
Cost and Maintenance.  Trex is about double the price of redwood decking.
Maintenance is easy.

Where would I purchase Trex Products?
Nationwide Trex decking is available at  over 2500 lumber dealers.
You can call 1-800-BUY-TREX for the dealer or contractor nearest you.
Also you'll find Trex pricing competitive with premium grades of wood
decking.

Is Trex safe to walk on when it gets wet?
Yes. Trex  has a surface that when wet will not be slippery.

What is Trex made of?
From reclaimed or recycled products.
Approximately 60% reclaimed wood fiber, and 40% used plastic.

Can Trex be painted?
Yes, but it defeats the purpose, because once it's painted it will require
repainted continually to keep it's appearance.

Does running  decking diagonally cost more?
Yes while sporting a nice look.  Expect around 30% waste.

Do I need to cement the posts in?
Yes. You can also use saddle brackets to attach the posts to cement about 24
inches deep.

Do I need joist hangers for my trex deck?
Definitely, it's the best way to build a deck frame and be sure to use galvanized
nails made for a joist hanger. These are stronger nails and hold up well.

Can I fasten deck boards without nails showing?
Absolutely, you can buy special deck clips that won't be seen , because
they are installed on the side of the board. You can if you choose to nail down
the boards or screw them in from the top, using  the proper outdoor screw.

Can I use other types of fasteners on the Decking boards?

Yes.  If you decide to use screws or nails, make sure they are of high quality.
For example, be sure to use ceramic coated,  stainless steel,  or hot dipped
galvanized types of nails and screws. Another good one is spiral shank nails,
which ensure a tighter hold of the board to the joists. Pre-drilling holes before
attaching the screws or nails is not generally required, if you use self-tapping
deck screws. Be sure to install the screw or nail one inch from the edges of
the boards.  If you decide to use a nail gun for nail installation, this will work fine.

What is a good proper step rise?
Usually 8" high and 10" across.

Can my Trex deck support a hot tub?
Yes, but with proper pre planning.  Have a professional lay it out for you.
Proper support is very important for your deck to support the weight of a spa.

How often do I need to seal a wood deck?
Most paint manufacturers will recommend 1-2 years, preferably each year.
It's best to use an oil stain product such as Olympic stain, super deck and
the like.
