Decking
Rules to Follow
Avoid problems in the Beginning
Decking can be a project that homeowners may want to tackle.
Whether you design your own deck or work of plans be sure your deck
meets the current building codes.
|
Mistakes can be made in the building process that can cause safety
problems or structural deterioration. To avoid that have your
plans checked and approved by your local building department.
Most mistakes DIY ers make are as follows; Spans that are too
long, improper ledger to house installation, and post to footing.
Also improper installation of beams to post attachments and missing
or incorrect railings. Plus Stair installation of wrong
dimensions and not consistent.

Again check your local Building Codes to avoid costly mistakes.
At least by doing so, you will identify the minimum
construction standards that will affect the most difficulty areas of
your deck construction.
Another factor for your consideration, is that building codes
usually require the minimum, so you might want to exceed certain
code requirements ensuring a better built deck.
What is Required
Sketch out or show your plan to the local building department.
Next make sure your deck will conform to zoning regulations so the
drawing should show the deck's relationship to other structures and
property lines.
Obtain free spec sheet or handout that contain codes and other
information.
Other Factors to discuss with the Building Department:
If deck is Cantilevered.
It's exposure to high winds or heavy snow load. Consider the
load requirements
