Decking Guide

Could I the Homeowner build my own Deck?

Yes it is possible that You can build your own deck, please keep reading;

However what knowledge of building and carpentry do you posses?  Decks will range from fairly simple to very difficult.  If it is a simple deck with plans already drawn up, most likely you can build the deck yourself.  Please be sure to not take anything for granted when doing a project like this for the first time especially.  First collect information, what tools will be needed, what kind of wood framing material should I use, should I use screws to screw down the deck boards and many more questions. Buy screws that are designed for decking.

Also be sure to adhere to local building codes, which may involve asking the Building department some questions and what size of deck is permissible for your property. What decking materials are permitted in the city limits, etc.

Probably the easiest deck building project is what is called the Free Standing deck.  It will not be attached to your house or anything else.  Although it will require free standing support posts, that can range from 4x4 post and thicker depending on the building codes.  Usually these are attached to cement piers cast in a hole dug approx. 2'x2' filled with cement.

One suggestion is go to the library or a book store for a how to book on building a deck.

You will also have to learn about installing rails and post caps, joist hangers, and how to string out your foundation before you do anything else.  See my Building a deck page. Tools that will be needed; Hammer, drill, square, level , wrench, and common sense.  Best to plan ahead and make a list that will help organize your project.

Well- Good luck and enjoy your new deck.
