Decking Guide

Keeping your joists from rotting

Lately in the industry ACQ preservatives used in the pressure treated framing lumber are not of the quality we have seen in the past.  Just what does that mean for the homeowner or Builder?

To ensure maximum protection of the joists from rot, it may be necessary to use a joist jacket.  That is, to flash the tops of the joists making a covering of of sorts over each joist, just an inch or so on the sides of the joists.  The top portion of a joist will accumulate the most water and debris contributing to dry rot.  So for $25.00 or so and a little time, take the  needed precaution.

For the do-it-yourselfer, it requires no skilled labor, and only a pair of sissors and some kind of tacker to hold the material in place temporaily.  Then the deck boards would go over the joists and the installed joist jacket material.

It will also  contribute to sound absorbing and reduce squeaks.  Stair risers can also be protected from rot by application.

Joist jackets come in rolls of 50 feet or so, at 2, 4, and 6 inch widths.  Again used to slightly overhang the joists which promotes water to run down the sides of the joists so water will not accumulate over time.  Usually these joist jackets have a sticky side  that  adheres to the wood joists, then your decking would be installed over the joist jacket.  It also promotes a quieter deck too.  These jackets are made from recycled PVC.
